Cops acting like crooks – Shameful!

Okay, it’s time for another rant! This week I met with a client who received a speeding ticket in a little town called Lawtey, Florida. Tickets – usually no big deal. I inquire about the factual circumstances, examine the ticket and review the applicability of the charge to the factual. But, when I dug a little deeper into THIS ticket issue, what I discovered was a blatant pattern of deceit and entrapment. There’s no other way to put it – it just smells of criminality and racketeering – and should be treated as such. I don’t care who you are, no one, including the police are above the law.

So I did a little more research on the mighty metropolis (population of 730) of Lawtey, Florida. This sleepy little town has the dubious distinction of being deemed by AAA to be one of the designated speed traps in the state of Florida. The sole existence of the police department appears to be to harass, intimidate and issue tickets to unsuspecting individuals, who have the great misfortune of traveling on US 301 through Bradford County, Florida.

There are websites that vividly display a pattern of systematic police thuggery, dating back for decades. Story after story reflects the same reprehensible actions by the police officers who prey upon drivers who pass through their seedy town. A few of the many articles and blog posts appear to infer this nefarious police action is even encouraged by the local public officials.

What happened to the old’n days, where television shows like Adam 12 depicted police officers who believed in service and exercised common sense? Where the police cruiser prominently displayed mottos like to “To protect and serve.” In Lawtey, who are they protecting and who are they serving? It appears clear that they are serving themselves and protecting no one. They are simply a blight on the reputations of the good officers in blue, whose daily hard work and service protect us all. The officers of the Lawtey Police Department should be shunned, and frankly, the whole department shut down.

You might recall another little city police department just up the road from Lawtey called Waldo. The Waldo Police Department several years ago was finally disbanded, because of the same harassment and racketeering that is going on in Lawtey. Where is the Florida Attorney General in pursuing complaints when such police actions are clearly inappropriate, open and notorious?

I absolutely detest abuse of power and I will not go down without a fight against such wanton abuse. I truly believe what Edmund Burke stated, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” So here’s what I’m going to do about it – I am going to send out record requests, under the state freedom of information sunshine law act and scour every tangible document, traffic engineering report, calibration report, crime statistic records and video surveillance. I am going to establish a pattern of corruption. I will defend this client in court, insure that all testimony is preserved by a court reporter, take the testimony of witnesses and the police officer, and then see if the judiciary in Bradford County is as corrupt as its police department. I will then submit all hearing records and responses to the Florida Attorney General’s office for action in my crusade to ensure that this thievery stops.

Incidentally, a new law is in effect in Florida as of July 1, 2015, which prohibits a police department from making “revenue from its actions that exceed 33% of its budget” – a law designed to stop contemptuous actions like this. The cops in Lawtey are giving criminals a run for their money – for when a person with an extensive criminal history commits crimes, you expect it; but when those who have a sworn an oath to protect and preserve our rights commits a crime against us, it only enhances the wrong. Justice will be served!
